Thanks Givin’er

I’m blown away that the year is this far through and we are already celebrating Thanksgiving weekend. I have another really exciting weekend coming up with lots of riding planned as well as a trip to Kelowna to Broken Social Scene play on Sunday evening.  While the washing machine cleans my clothes for this weekend I am relaxing on my couch, having a beer, and reflecting a bit on how amazing this year has been and all the great things I’ve had the chance to experience…

Getting 2 brand new bikes. Riding 83 different trails covering everything from epic cross-country single track in Canmore to Machine built trails in Whistler. Shooting a gun for the first time. Shredding into the sunset. Spending a week snapping photos with Aggy and Gibtron. Coaching camps at Sun Peaks Resort. Countless hours driving to my favorite tunes. Catching my first fish. Ripping down Blue Flag in the hardest rain storm I’ve ever seen. Attending Brett’s wedding. Spinning my downhill bike off a drop for the first time. Moon-lit canoeing. Riding my BMX ’till the sun came up. Getting a new truck. Filming with amazing riders for lots of different videos. Swimming in Heffly lake after Sun Peaks Days. Doing my first bungee jump. Riding XC until I couldn’t see straight. Pedaling through snow. Whistler hot laps. Jumping a golf cart. Sitting by so many camp fires. Flying between sage brush. Sessioning the Flow Zone with old friends and new friends. Spending a week cruising single track in mid-summer heat followed by cocktails each night.  Getting sideways often. Staying strong and healthy (for the most part!) and I am probably forgetting a ton.

If you were a part of or helped out with anything I mentioned then THANK YOU, for making my life so fun.

Sun Peaks Freeride Camp

The whole camp crew ready to rip it at Sun Peaks!

Have you ever wanted to ride your bike down a variety of different trails ranging from tech shore style runs to high speed, bermed up, machine built race courses? How about build some new skills and ride some stunts you never thought you could? Snack on some fancy food or soak up the atmosphere of a super laid back European style resort?  What if you could do all this at the same time, under the careful instruction of the locals who know this zone the best? For one sunny week in July a fortunate group of young riders got to experience it all at the Sun Peaks Freeride Camp.

Sideways Days

It must have been a pleasant scene to view for anyone riding the hill that day. The dirt stained a slightly darker brown from the previous nights rain. Thin clouds passing over the sky, not so much as to block the sun but to allow everything a fine gold tint. Small pink flowers brushed the green hillside and three young men wore yellow boots. It was fall at Sun Peaks.

Beyond the orange flags and black signs urging riders to wear helmets and gauge there speed accordingly lie a particularly exciting addition to the adventures Sun Peaks has to offer. Freshly sculpted mounds of dirt shaped carefully to ensure a flowing succession of big airs. No brakes, no pedals. Just shredding. This area was designed as part of the ride down the mountain but we found ourselves stuck in this section for hours and hours , riding the jumps over and over. Rushing to get the shots as if we were addled enough in our thinking that we might forget whats important to us if we don’t show others.

Memories of Summer…

As I find myself continually sitting on the couch watching the world go by, I reflect on one of the best years riding thus far.

Waiting for instruction from Todd on what to do next. Photo Todd Hellinga

Do I say that each year? Yep… and it just re-enforces that riding is something that I am going to continue doing once my leg heals. I have about two weeks until I can put weight on it and then I have to get the strength back on it before I can ride again. Time is all I need…

The following are some shots from a 3 day trip I took with Todd Hellinga and Seb Kemp, stopping in Lillooet, Sun Peaks and Silver Star. The trip culminated with NSMB Airprentice in Silver Star.

This is a lot steeper than it looks. And much less smooth than we had originally thought. Photo Todd Hellinga

Some rare tacky berm action at Sun Peaks. Sun Peaks is one of my favorite places to ride. Photo Todd Hellinga

Going to try and get back on my game to spend the closing weekend in Whistler. I just got wind that Dirt Merchant is being re-worked, and I want to be able to throw some laps in.

Cheers!

Bicycle Cafe September Update

dylansherrard_rain

It might be starting to get chilly outside but the riding is still hot in
kamloops! I’ve been having more fun than ever now that the craziness of
summer has been pushed away. Work at the store is alot more quiet so I can
take more time off to ride, all the kids are back in town for school so
its easy to catch them for a ride and everything is just chill.

The Bicycle Cafe In August

justin-terwiel-2At this point in the season I have just one question on my mind, where did summer go? It seems like summer just stopped by to give me a high five, “sup Bro?” and then got outta town as quick as possible. I’m actually excited that summer is out of the way now but it really freaks me out thinking of how fast time is moving by. Soon fall will come with lots of cool weather and rain for us, so all the amazing riding will be restored.

It’s August Already!?

dylanBicycle Café Team July Update
July has been hands down the busiest month of the year. Between all of us there was something exciting going on every couple of days and I think everyone had a blast being busy in the summer heat. Summer brings with itself contests and chairlifts, both of which bring on opportunities for a whole lot of bicycle related fun times.

It used to be called Tod Mountain which we of course called Odd Mountain. Known to be one of the premiere mountain bike parks in the world, Sun Peaks boasts 2000 feet of whoop whoop. Alain from ski school and Christopher Nicholson set us up with some tickets, and Time2Ride shop hooked my big little bro up with a Rocky Mountain Flatline right outta the box!!! Sarah, Jake and I grabbed Steven Patterson, old school motohead and former Canada Cup pro DH ripper, for some laps and we proceeded to get our shred on!! Despite no liftlines and having a “personal lift” we were lucky enough to run into big air maestro’s Dylan Sherrard, a fellow Race Face rider and 19 year old mechanic from the Bicycle Cafe, and Matt Brooks, a 24 year old wildman who does all the big hucks in Kamloops you see in the movies.
